Let’s talk about facts vs. fiction when it comes to tanning. 🌞 For years, the professional tanning industry has been painted as the bad guy, accused of causing sunburns and filling up emergency rooms. But guess what? That’s simply not true.
The reality? Most sunburns don’t happen in tanning salons—they happen outdoors. And yet, anti-sun groups still push outdated, misleading claims to scare people away from responsible UV exposure. One of the most ridiculous? A 2014 study that claimed 3,234 emergency room visits per year were caused by sunbeds. Sounds scary, right? Until you actually look at the numbers.
Breaking Down the B.S.
🚨 The study’s "big scary number" was completely manufactured. The data came from just 405 ER reports over 10 years across 66 hospitals. That’s fewer than 41 cases per year—or less than one per hospital annually. Not exactly a crisis.
🧐 They had to dig through a database to find those cases. The researchers literally had to search for cases that fit their anti-tanning agenda. They never released their exact criteria, which means the whole thing is pretty sketchy.
🤯 Laundry baskets cause 7 times more ER visits than sunbeds. Yes, you read that right. But when was the last time you saw a headline screaming about the dangers of laundry?
📉 Sunbed-related ER visits have dropped dramatically. The study even showed that in 2012, sunbed-related reports were three times lower than in 2003. But of course, that part got buried.
🏢 They lumped professional tanning salons together with unregulated beds at gyms, apartments, and homes. Meaning, the majority of these "injuries" had nothing to do with trained tanning professionals.
When you actually crunch the numbers, the ER injury rate for professional tanning salons is nearly zero—somewhere between zero and three-ten-thousandths of one percent. So yeah, this study was total nonsense.
